What is the relationship between nickel-based alloys and stainless steel? Is it a type of stainless steel?

Nickel-based alloys are a type of high-alloy stainless steel with a high nickel, high chromium, and high molybdenum chemical composition, giving them excellent high-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. Nickel-based alloys not only possess the characteristics of stainless steel but also offer additional advantages due to their higher nickel and chromium content. They maintain stability under various harsh conditions and are virtually unaffected by external factors.

Nickel-based alloys are classified into nickel-based heat-resistant alloys, nickel-based corrosion-resistant alloys, nickel-based wear-resistant alloys, nickel-based precision alloys, and nickel-based shape memory alloys, based on their different primary properties. Nickel-based alloys exhibit high strength and a certain degree of resistance to oxidation and corrosion at high temperatures, and are widely used in aerospace, nuclear energy, chemical, and oil and gas extraction industries.

Compared to ordinary stainless steel, nickel-based alloys differ significantly in chemical composition and properties. Ordinary stainless steel, such as 304 grade, is prone to corrosion or high-temperature oxidation in high-temperature or highly corrosive environments, while nickel-based alloys remain stable under these conditions, demonstrating their “super stainless steel” characteristics. For example, 254SMo steel exhibits good resistance to pitting and stress corrosion under seawater, aeration, interstitial, and low-velocity erosion conditions, making it a suitable alternative to nickel-based and titanium alloys.

In general, nickel-based alloys, due to their unique chemical composition and high performance, are classified as special stainless steels and are widely used in various industrial applications requiring high-temperature, high-pressure, and corrosive environments.
