Alloys composed of nickel as a base and other elements are called nickel alloys. Nickel possesses excellent mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. Adding suitable elements can improve its oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, and certain physical properties. Nickel alloys are used as materials for electron tubes, precision alloys (magnetic alloys, precision resistance alloys, electrothermal alloys, etc.), nickel-based high-temperature alloys, nickel-based corrosion-resistant alloys, and shape memory alloys. They have wide applications in energy development, chemical industry, electronics, marine, aviation, and aerospace.
Nickel can form various alloys with copper, iron, manganese, chromium, silicon, and magnesium. Among them, nickel-copper alloys are the well-known Monel alloys, which have high strength, good ductility, and are chemically stable in atmospheric conditions below 750 degrees Celsius. They are widely used in the electrical industry, vacuum tubes, chemical industry, medical equipment, and marine shipbuilding industry.
Nickel-based alloys are the most widely used and strongest materials among superalloys. The name “superalloy” originates from these material characteristics.
Including:
(1) Superior performance: Maintains high strength at high temperatures and possesses excellent mechanical properties such as anti-creep and anti-fatigue, as well as oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, and good plasticity and weldability.
(2) Extremely complex alloying: Nickel-based alloys often incorporate more than ten alloying elements to enhance corrosion resistance in different environments; and to provide solid solution strengthening or precipitation strengthening.
(3) Extremely harsh working environments: Nickel-based alloys are widely used in various harsh operating conditions, such as high-temperature and high-pressure components in aerospace engine gas chambers, structural components in nuclear energy, petroleum, and marine industries, and corrosion-resistant pipelines.
